DESTINATION 5: Kowloon Masjid and Islamic Centre
Hello, I am King Sir, Religion does not only mean the personal beliefs, but also includes a lot of social ethical standards and restriction between society and individual behavior. When everyone raise a question about the religion in their beliefs, it is common to find out Western people believes Catholicism and Christianity while Chinese believes Buddhism for the most. Unfortunately, when I asked my friend about this question, they usually told me not to ask such boring problem at all, may be they are too young and lack knowledge and feeling about religion...

Today,
I would like to introduce the “Kowloon masjid and islamic
centre” in Hong Kong. It located in Kowloon at the
corner of Nathan Road and Haiphong Road next to Kowloon Park, the mosque is currently
the largest Islamic house of worship in the city.
The “Kowloon
Masjid and Islamic Centre”
was first established in 1896.
It was originally intended to serve the South
Asian Gurkhas and Indian Muslim
troops of the British army stationed at nearby Whitfield Barracks,
now the site of the adjacent Kowloon Park. Gurkhas
represent the front line army of British army in
World War 2 against of Japanese. They leaved their own country and would pray in
the Islamic Centre since they
believe their god would protect themself not to die in
the war. In
the late 1970s, the building suffered structural defects due to the underground
construction carried out for the Mass Transit Railway.
With the compensation given by Mass
Transit Railway Corporation and
donations from Muslims, a new Mosque was built and was open on 11 May 1984 on
the present site at 105 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, to replace the old one.
The most prominent features of the building are
the four 11 meters high minarets which mark the corners of the
upper terrace and the extensive use of white marble on both the paving and the
facade. The mosque
holds 5 prayers daily and is capable of accommodating up to approximately 3,500
people. In order to encourage more Hong Kong people to
understand Islam culture. The Open Day will be held on a regular basis as Hong
Kong's famous tourist spot. There are some rule to be followed when someone enter
the mosque, first thing to do is take off the shoes and net ritual, a net wash
the mouth, nose, face, palms to elbows, ankles and feet to wipe the head, neck,
behind the ears.
